Saskatchewan MP Wagantall introduces the Sex-selective Abortion Act
On Wednesday, February 26th, Cathay Wagantall, Member of Parliament for Yorkton—Melville, introduced a Private Member's Bill, C-233 (sex-selective abortion), that would amend the Criminal Code making it illegal for a medical practitioner to perform an abortion when the sole reason for the abortion is the sex of the pre-born child.
The Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association is excited to see this piece of legislation introduced in Parliament. We are also proud that it has been put forward by a Member of Parliament representing a Saskatchewan riding. "We appreciate the strength of Ms. Wagantall in raising this issue for discussion," said Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association President, Valerie Hetrick
Recently the Canadian healthcare profession has recognized that sex-selective abortion is a problem in Canada. This piece of legislation rightly seeks to end discrimination against pre-born girls simply because they are girls. It is consistent with Canada's commitment to advancing human rights both at home and abroad.
This bill represents not only the views of many in Saskatchewan, but also those held by a majority throughout all of Canada. A recent poll indicated that 84% of Canadians are opposed to sex-selective abortion.
Ms. Wagantall stated in a press release: "Sex selective abortion is antithetical to our commitment to equality and needs to be prohibited as an unacceptable practice." Ms. Wagantall was also the Member of Parliament who introduced "Cassie and Molly's Law," which addressed the issue of pre-born victims of crime. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass. The Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association applauds Ms. Wagantall's commitment to defending vulnerable women and girls. "We are proud to have Ms. Wagantall representing Saskatchewan in Parliament,” said Ms. Hettrick
